Business Benefits for our Ecosystem Designed by Startup Maryland Champions

An Ecosystem Perspective by Gabe Solano Founder of Business Benefit Solutions:

Hello Startup Maryland Entrepreneurs and Ecosystem Partner Peers,

On behalf of the motivated team at Business Benefits Solutions (BBS), we are reaching out as a proud partner/sponsor of the Startup Maryland community.

As ecosystem partners and leaders yourselves, you understand that our entrepreneurs and their growing teams,  are tearing down old-guard methodologies in various industry sectors and are fueling growth in Maryland, the broader region and across the globe in both uncertain times and extremely competitive talent markets.

Over the past year, BBS has become indoctrinated into the  Startup Maryland Ecosystem  Model and have witnessed its nurturing stance and hands-on support for entrepreneur founders and their community of support.  We firmly believe in the 4Cs approach of Celebration, Coaching, Curation and Capital fostered by Startup Maryland.

As doers, we take great pride in ensuring BBS  and our cadre of leading providers are not simply going through the motions. Rather, we are very intentional in our efforts to bring disruptive and innovative approaches to health /wellness and financial benefits

Leveraging our network of blue-chip partners we are able to bring  Fortune 500 benefit offerings to both established AND growing companies actively participating in the Startup Maryland entrepreneurial ecosystem model.

We believe the entrepreneurial ecosystem model is without a doubt the most powerful force for both economic and cultural growth in Maryland and will afford our community to “take the wheel” and drive the future of the broader Mid-Atlantic.

unknown Gabe Solano for Business Benefit Solutions

Startup Maryland’s unique position offers BBS a powerful platform from which to build lasting friendships first and business relationships second.  By getting to know founders and their supporters we more quickly understand the passion and mission driving many of these ventures toward success.  Our unique approach to sponsorship and partnership builds bonds with prospects on a deep and enduring level.

Over five years Startup Maryland has established itself as the “easy button” for entrepreneur founders and CxO teams. Startup Maryland is now working actively with sponsors and partners to introduce the right-resources at the right-time for high-growth innovation ventures.

We are delighted and humbled to be a part of that team!

Cyber Day at the State House

By building trust and collaboration with entrepreneurs, BBS believes we are uniquely positioned as a peer and partner to the Startup Maryland ecosystem before anything else. This approach has allowed us to generate extreme value both for our entrepreneur founders, as well as for our network of provider affiliates,  in ways unmatched by traditional economic development approaches.

For Example, building on the Startup Maryland 4Cs ecosystem model,  BBS joined as a full-tour sponsor for the entire STRT1UP Roadshow where we engaged with various ecosystem partners including academia/universities, incubators/accelerators, tech councils, associations, chambers as well as city/county/state economic development agencies.  Since the Pitch Across Maryland Showcase event in December we have also been working with select ecosystem partners in hosting educational seminars designed to boost wellness and benefits knowledge for startup founder-teams as well as their ecosystem supporters.

For example, in February we partnered with SparkBaltimore/Cordish Companies in support of their Wellness Summit which was held at the Spark co-working space at PowerPlantLive

In moving forward we hope to continue to educate and cut costs from business budgets — particularly during periods of inflection by bringing diverse and flexible benefits to the ecosystem.

With all of the uncertainty surrounding the future of quality healthcare, we hope to function as your first point of contact for all things benefits — whether that be financial or wellness.

No matter if you have simple questions or have immediate complex benefit needs, feel free to connect with us directly.  In the meantime, we are working with Startup Maryland and other ecosystem leaders on a series of, “What  You Need to Know About the American Health Care Plan, ” webinars to be scheduled over the coming months starting on April 4th.

Laura Jane Willoughby Joins as Poet Laureate and Creative in Residence

Startup Maryland™ Announces First Creative in Residence & Poet Laureate for the 2016 STRT1UP Road Show

Combining prose, creativity and entrepreneurism, Poet Laureate Laura Jane Willoughby will provide the voice of the tour September 10 thru October 8

September 16, 2016: All Points, Maryland – Today Startup Maryland announced the addition of an official Poet Laureate for the STRT1UP Road Show, the fifth annual state-wide tour and celebration of entrepreneurship and high-growth innovation-centric startup companies.  Providing real-time updates, tweets, and snippets in prose and images from tour moments as they happen, the role will provide a creative take on the state-wide bus tour unfolding September 10 through October 8.

This year, STRT1UP Road Show is pleased to welcome Laura Jane Willoughby aboard the bus as it travels to more than 30 stops across the state, where entrepreneurs pitch their start-up business ideas for a chance to receive coaching, guidance, support and even funding from leaders across academia, incubators/accelerators, economic development agencies, service providers as well as active angel/VC investors.

Willoughby is a Maryland-based creative writer, and previously spent more than 10 years involved in Maryland’s technology ecosystem in roles with several organizations. During the tour’s stops, Willoughby will share images, prose and insights via StartUp Maryland’s social media platforms on Twitter (@StartUpMd), Instagram (@startupMaryland), LinkedIn and Facebook as well as on her own platforms.

“Entrepreneurism is, by definition, creative, so it made sense to bring in a Poet Laureate as our first Creative in Residence who can capture the pulse of the tour as it happens, while also providing insights start-ups can use,” said Michael Binko, Founder|CEO of Startup Maryland. “Maryland is rich in workforce talent, entrepreneur hustle and the assembly of resources needed to support high-growth ventures – we call this ecosystem. We feel bridging relationships between artists and entrepreneurs is a dynamic way to increase growth within the ecosystem because it is essential to approach challenges as an entrepreneur with a creative mindset.”

At each STRT1UP Road Show tour stop, Tour Partners/Sponsors host rallies sharing information about their entrepreneurial ecosystems across the state.  As the tour unfolds, entrepreneurs climb onto the Startup Maryland bus and pitch their idea/business in the mobile “UpStart Show™ video studio.  Videos are uploaded to the Startup Maryland YouTube® Channel and then open to public viewing/voting.  This aspect of the STRT1UP Road Show embodies the Pitch Across Maryland competition allowing the entrepreneurs, sponsors, investors and tour hosts to activate social networks for even broader awareness and celebration.

“Prose can capture the beauty and the heartache of what it means to be invested in an idea so completely that it often seems like the most important thing in the world,” Willoughby said.  “By highlighting the hopes and dreams of pitch contestants, the success stories and the ebb and flow of life aboard the bus tour, we hope to provide a unique take on how creativity is the integral element to a successful business climate. My experience in Maryland’s technology market, as well as time I spent as an entrepreneur myself, means I feel intricately connected to the story of start-ups and business in this state.”

Startup Maryland Great Eight Finalists for Pitch Across Maryland

Finalist Invited to Pitch Their Venture Opportunities at the

TEDCO Entrepreneur Expo on November 17

NOVEMBER 10, 2015 – EVERYWHERE, MD – Startup Maryland (www.startupmd.org) today announced the Great Eight (8) Finalists for the 2015 Pitch Across Maryland tour and celebration of innovation and entrepreneurship.

After posting nearly 150 video pitches from Maryland entrepreneurs that were captured during the three-week Pitch Across Maryland tour | celebration, Startup Maryland is proud to showcase the eight finalists. This year’s Finalist companies are listed below with a link to their 2015 pitch video:

Great 8 Finalists:

“Our review panel had a very challenging time winnowing the Pitch Across Maryland field to only eight finalists this year,” stated Michael Binko, Founder|CEO of Startup Maryland. “The word is out and our tour stop partners really brought their A-game in helping identify and encourage strong startups to participate in this year’s tour.”

Nothing sells a concept or business idea better than the entrepreneurs themselves. The passion, enthusiasm and determination captured in Pitch Across Maryland video format gives investors much more depth than the dry statistics and standard formatting of a typical business plan or executive summary document.

All eight finalists are now invited to present their pitch again in a slightly longer and more formal format during the final Pitching Mound session at the 2015 TEDCO Entrepreneur Expo.

Building on their shorter Pitch Across Maryland video, the Entrepreneur Expo Great Eight Finalist pitches will be longer and afford the entrepreneurs a chance to share more detail about their venture/opportunity with ecosystem builders including investors, potential employees, incubators/accelerator teams and economic development officers.

“Finalists will present their venture roadmap to the full community of conference attendees and another panel of investor/entrepreneur experts will then select and announce the Pitch Across Maryland Winner and a Runner-up live at the Expo,” added Binko.

Separately, TEDCO has also agreed to select up to two of the Finalists to be catapulted directly to a Technology Commercialization Fund or Cybersecurity Innovation Fund $100,000 investment pitch.  These selected Finalists will have to submit a TEDCO-compliant application for evaluation.

Members of the media are being directed to all Video Playlists to learn more about the innovations and entrepreneurs building great companies in Maryland and across the broader Mid-Atlantic region. The link to all Pitch Across Maryland playlists follows here:
