Startup Maryland Announces Fan Favorites for Pitch Across Maryland Tour

Fourth Annual State-Wide Tour and Celebration of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Reveals Strong Startup Ecosystems in Wide Variety of Industry Sectors

NOVEMBER 6, 2015 – EVERYWHERE, MD – Startup Maryland (www.startupmd.org) today announces the Fan Favorites in two categories for the 2015 Pitch Across Maryland tour and celebration of innovation and entrepreneurship.

After posting nearly 150 video pitches from Maryland entrepreneurs that were captured during the three-week Pitch Across Maryland tour | celebration, Startup Maryland is proud this year to announce two categories of Fan Favorites — Most Viewed and Most Social.

“This year the activity around the Startup Maryland pitch videos has been stellar,” stated Michael Binko, founder and CEO of Startup Maryland. “Interest from investors, media and service providers in the Pitch Across Maryland demonstrates how vibrant our innovation ecosystem is and the engagement of these communities by our pitch entrepreneurs is the spirit celebrated by our Fan Favorite designations.”

While in the past the Fan Favorite traditionally highlighted the top three Most Viewed videos, this year the Startup Maryland team decided to also highlight the startups that demonstrated consistent social engagement throughout the month since the tour concluded. The startups that embodied these efforts and outcomes are listed below with a link to their pitch video:

Fan Favorites – Most Viewed:

Fan Favorites – Most Social:

The Fan Favorite portion of the competition is a fun activity that Startup Maryland added as a component of the Pitch Across Maryland to keep the awareness and celebration aspects of the tour at a high level.

A second competition, which will continue this year until noon on November 11, determines the Great Eight Finalists. The eight (8) finalist companies will receive invitations to the annual TEDCO Entrepreneur Expo held on November 17.

At the Entrepreneur Expo, the Great Eight Finalists will be given the opportunity to present a more comprehensive ‘pitch’ of their venture and opportunity. Building on their shorter Pitch Across Maryland video, the Entrepreneur Expo Great Eight Finalist pitches will be longer and afford the entrepreneurs a chance to share more detail about their venture/opportunity with ecosystem builders including investors, potential employees, incubators/accelerator teams and economic development officers.

“Finalists will present their business plans to the full community of conference attendees and another panel of investor/entrepreneur experts will then select and announce the Pitch Across Maryland Winner and a Runner-up live at the Expo,” added Binko.

Separately, TEDCO will select up to two of the Finalists to be catapulted directly to a Technology Commercialization Fund or Cybersecurity Innovation Fund $100,000 investment pitch.  These selected Finalists will have to submit a TEDCO-compliant application for evaluation.

Members of the media are being directed to all Video Playlists to learn more about the innovations and entrepreneurs building great companies in Maryland and across the broader Mid-Atlantic region. The link to all Pitch Across Maryland playlists follows here:

Startup Maryland Great Eight Finalists for Pitch Across Maryland

Finalist Invited to Pitch Their Venture Opportunities at the

TEDCO Entrepreneur Expo on November 17

NOVEMBER 10, 2015 – EVERYWHERE, MD – Startup Maryland (www.startupmd.org) today announced the Great Eight (8) Finalists for the 2015 Pitch Across Maryland tour and celebration of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Great 8 Finalists:

“Our review panel had a very challenging time winnowing the Pitch Across Maryland field to only eight finalists this year,” stated Michael Binko, Founder|CEO of Startup Maryland. “The word is out and our tour stop partners really brought their A-game in helping identify and encourage strong startups to participate in this year’s tour.”

Nothing sells a concept or business idea better than the entrepreneurs themselves. The passion, enthusiasm and determination captured in Pitch Across Maryland video format gives investors much more depth than the dry statistics and standard formatting of a typical business plan or executive summary document.

All eight finalists are now invited to present their pitch again in a slightly longer and more formal format during the final Pitching Mound session at the 2015 TEDCO Entrepreneur Expo.

“Finalists will present their venture roadmap to the full community of conference attendees and another panel of investor/entrepreneur experts will then select and announce the Pitch Across Maryland Winner and a Runner-up live at the Expo,” added Binko.

Separately, TEDCO has also agreed to select up to two of the Finalists to be catapulted directly to a Technology Commercialization Fund or Cybersecurity Innovation Fund $100,000 investment pitch.  These selected Finalists will have to submit a TEDCO-compliant application for evaluation.

Vheda Health Claims Top Spot and BrinkBit Takes Second Place as Diversity of Maryland Innovation Shines Front-and-Center at TEDCO Entrepreneur Expo

NOVEMBER 17, 2014 – EVERYWHERE, MD – Startup Maryland (www.startupmd.org) today announced the Great two top Finalists from the 2014 Pitch Across Maryland celebration.

After qualifying and posting more than 150 video pitches from Maryland entrepreneurs that were captured during the three-week Pitch Across Maryland tour | celebration, Startup Maryland is proud to announce Vheda Health (Howard County/MCE) and BrinkBit (uBalt, ETC, EAGB, GBC) as Winner and Runner-up, respectively.

The winners were distilled by two separate review panels of serial entrepreneurs, investors and economic development officers over two months and two rounds of judging. Eight finalists presented their ventures and opportunities during the final afternoon session at the 2014 TEDCO Entrepreneur Expo – held November 12 in Elkridge, MD.

“The first round judges voiced considerable angst trying to winnow the Pitch Across Maryland field to 8 Finalists and the quality of the pitches at the Expo reveled exactly why that task was so difficult. The diversity of industries and innovations is quite a testament to why Maryland is an early-stage venture powerhouse,” stated Michael Binko, Founder | president of Startup Maryland. “We are now seriously thinking about expanding the finalist field to 16 or 32 companies next year.”

As Winner and Runner-up, Vheda Health and BrinkBit are now catapulted into the second round of Maryland DBED’s InvesMaryland Challenge – a startup pitch competition with more than $1million in early stage investment and prizes awarded to high growth potential ventures. Their entry fees are waived and both companies bi-pass the hotly-contested first round of reviewing given the fact that they have already been thoroughly vetted after the grueling two months of scrutiny during the Pitch Across Maryland. They also receive $2000 worth of monthly cloud hosting from Rackspace – a corporate sponsor of the Pitch Across Maryland.

Active equity investors and members of the media are invited to view all Pitch Across Maryland videos here and contact the Startup Maryland team to learn more about the innovations and entrepreneurs building great companies in Maryland and across the broader Mid-Atlantic region.
